A 3D-printed educational product for Year 4 animal classification.
Winning 2nd place during the Gallery Walk was a proud moment for my group. It showed that our product was not only creative, but also useful for teaching and learning.
For the Gallery Walk, my group created Learning Gear. It is a 3D-printed educational product designed for Year 4 primary school students. The product focuses on animal classification, especially the relationship between animal groups, animal traits, and examples of animals.
Learning Gear uses three rotating gears. One gear represents the animal group, one gear represents the animal trait, and one gear represents the animal example. Pupils rotate and match the gears to form correct classification chains, such as mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds with their correct traits and examples.
This product was designed to solve a real learning problem. Some pupils may become confused when learning animal classification. For example, they may assume that all animals that live in water are fish. Learning Gear helps pupils understand these concepts through visual and hands-on learning.

Instead of only memorising facts from a textbook, pupils can rotate, match, test, and correct their answers.
If pupils make a wrong match, they can discuss with their friends and try again in a low-pressure way.
Pupils can work together, explain their choices, and justify their answers.
One of the strengths of Learning Gear is that it is very versatile. Although our original version was designed for Science, the same concept can be used for other subjects.
| Subject | Gear 1 | Gear 2 | Gear 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science | Animal Group | Trait | Animal Example |
| Chemistry | Chemical Type | Property | Example |
| English | Prefix | Root Word | Suffix |
| Bahasa Melayu | Imbuhan Awalan | Kata Dasar | Imbuhan Akhiran |
| Grammar | Subject | Verb | Object |
For example, in English, Learning Gear can be used to teach prefix, root word, and suffix. In Bahasa Melayu, it can be used to teach imbuhan awalan, kata dasar, and imbuhan akhiran. In Chemistry, it can help students match chemical groups, properties, and examples.
This helped me realise that a good educational product should not be limited to one topic only. It should be flexible and adaptable for different learning contexts.
